It is technically possible to restrict the work of WhatsApp on the territory of Russia, said the head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology and Communications Alexander Khinshtein (United Russia). In his opinion, changes in the messenger's policy are contrary to Russian law.

“Technically, I think it is possible to do this (to limit the work of the messenger in Russia – Kommersant ), but from the point of view of making an essential decision, this is a matter of broad discussion,” Mr. Khinshtein told RIA Novosti.

The deputy did not rule out appealing to Roskomnadzor about the new messenger policy. “I believe that changes in the WhatsApp policy are contrary to Russian law, since personal data is the inalienable property of its owner, and the possibility of transferring it to third or more parties without the consent of the person himself is impossible. We will discuss with Roskomnadzor as a regulator in this area, what could be the response measures from Russia and what the official assessment will be, ”he added.

Today, May 15, WhatsApp limited the functionality of user accounts that did not accept the new rules. They will still be able to receive calls and receive notifications for a short period, but will no longer be able to read or reply to messages. Against the background of the renewal of the agreement, Roskomnadzor said that the WhatsApp messenger does not sufficiently protect the personal data of users. The State Duma called the new rules of the messenger illegal and unethical.

The reasons for changing the rules – in the material “Kommersant FM” “WhatsApp disconnects.”
