The head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology and Communications Alexander Khinshtein (United Russia) said that blocking WhatsApp in Russia is not being discussed. So he commented on his statement that limiting the work of the messenger is technically possible. Mr. Khinshtein noted that it is also theoretically “possible to deliver a nuclear missile strike against Washington.”

“I see a lot of excitement in connection with my comment to RIA Novosti about the actions of WhatsApp: in the State Duma, they say, they propose to block the work of the messenger in Russia. I hasten to reassure everyone: this is not so. There is no talk of any blocking, ”the deputy wrote on Telegram.

Mr. Khinshtein reiterated his thesis that blocking is technically possible. “How theoretically possible is a nuclear missile strike on Washington. But opportunity itself does not mean action, ”he wrote. According to him, the decision on how to react to WhatsApp actions will be made by Roskomnadzor.

On May 15, WhatsApp limited the functionality of user accounts that did not accept the new data processing policy. They will still be able to receive calls and receive notifications for a short period, but will no longer be able to read or reply to messages.

The reasons for changing the rules – in the material “Kommersant FM” “WhatsApp disconnects.”
