The state of emergency will operate until January 19.

A state of emergency has been introduced in Kazakhstan due to the rise in prices for liquefied autogas and subsequent mass protests .

This was reported by the presidential administration of Kazakhstan.

A state of emergency was introduced in the Mangistau region and the city of Almaty. The reason for this was the massive protests and clashes between security officials and protesters, which took place on January 4. More than 200 people were detained in Almaty .

“In connection with the aggravation of the situation in order to ensure public safety, restore law and order, protect the rights and freedoms of citizens, Head of State Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev signed decrees on the introduction of a state of emergency in the Mangistau region and the city of Almaty from January 5, from 01:30 am to 00:00 am on January 19, 2022 , “the press service of the Presidential Administration of Kazakhstan reported.

Note that the cost of fuel at local gas stations has more than doubled since this year. Previously, a liter of liquefied autogas cost 50-60 tenge per liter (3.80 hryvnia), now it is 120 tenge per liter (7.55 hryvnia).

Recall that the President of Kazakhstan approved the resignation of the government amid the “gas protests”.
