Kaspersky urged not to hand over biometrics due to risks of leaks

According to the chairman of the board of the Association of software developers “Domestic software”, president of InfoWatch Natalya Kasperskaya, biometric data is subject to a guaranteed risk of leakage. She advised users not to submit biometrics until companies explain how they plan to protect it.

“My personal recommendation: do not submit biometric data in any way, do not be carried out for convenience. They will be stolen, sold, merged almost with a guarantee. Let us first explain: how this data is planned to be protected, including from its employees, “- said Mrs. Kasperskaya in an interview with RIA Novosti. She noted that it remains unclear to her personally, “and why the use of biometrics is needed at all.”

Ms Kasperskaya believes that “some officials are directing us towards digitalization.” In her opinion, this threatens the formation of shadow power of people “who create and use digital systems – IT specialists, digital clerks, their bosses.” Officials promoting digital services do not fully understand these risks, she said.

The collection of biometrics through the Unified Biometric System (UBS) is carried out by banks; by the beginning of 2020, there were 160 thousand casts in the system. In 2021, the Ministry of Digital Industry proposed to expand the scope of the EBS to include a pass to buildings and the authentication of taxi drivers. Commercial biometrics are also used in the fitness and telecom industries. Earlier, Ms. Kaspersky has already stated about the dangers of using biometrics: according to her, leaks often occur from the inside, so it is not so important how protected they are from outside hacking.
