InfoWatch president and co-founder of Kaspersky Lab Natalya Kasperskaya recommended that Russians not submit biometric data because of the high risk of leaks. She told about this in an interview with RIA Novosti.
“My personal recommendation: do not submit biometric data in any way, do not be carried out for convenience. They will be stolen, sold, merged almost with a guarantee, “she said, suggesting first to wait for an explanation of” how this data is planned to be protected, including from their employees. ” According to Kaspersky, she basically does not understand why to use biometrics.
The main danger of introducing such a procedure, in her opinion, is the inability to verify and protect such data. People donate images of their faces and fingerprints, while photographs of faces are taken in many public places without their knowledge, Kaspersky recalled, noting that then this information could be leaked to the public or be stolen, Kaspersky noted.
In May this year, Deputy Finance Minister Alexei Moiseev called the compromise of biometric data “the worst thing that can happen.” According to him, regardless of which ecosystem a person trusts his biometrics – public or private – if it does not justify trust, then the life of this person in the “digital future” will be “broken”. According to him, it is possible to change the surname, passport or PIN-code on the card, “but most people will probably consider it too big a cost to change their face” or something else. Keeping the biometric data of Russians safe is much more important than improving the service in banks, he reasoned.
In February, Kasperskaya warned that the lack of control over the use of personal data in Russia, if not stopping its collection by “just anyone”, could lead to digital “Fukushima”.
Earlier, on October 1, the Interior Ministry announced its readiness to introduce electronic passports in Russia. So far, the biometric data of Russians is used to issue a new type of passport. To receive it, it is enough to scan your fingerprints.
