According to Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds, this initiative will significantly strengthen the military capabilities of the Baltic countries to protect their borders to ensure delay and block the movement of a potential enemy.
“This will be a common project of the Baltic countries, which will also help within the framework of NATO defense plans,” said Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds.
According to the plan of the heads of the Ministry of Defense, various deterrents will be developed and deployed on the external border of NATO and the European Union in the Baltics.
The defense ministers also emphasized that air defense capabilities must be strengthened as a critical component of the defense of the Baltic region.
During the preparations for the NATO summit in Washington, the Baltic defense ministers during the meeting expressed unanimous support for Ukraine's accession to NATO and the European Union, and also further emphasized the need for a targeted strengthening of NATO air defense in the region.
A meeting of the Committee of Defense Ministers of the Baltic States was held in Riga on January 18-19, in which Andris Spruds (Latvia), Arvydas Anusauskas (Lithuania) and Hanno Pevkur (Estonia) took part.
