The celebrity gave them to a mystery man for his birthday more than 55 years ago.
A pair of iconic round glasses belonging to British rocker and late Beatle John Lennon have sold at auction for £40,000 (£2 million) hryvnia).
The BBC reports this.
Auction house Catherine Southon Auctions reported that Lennon gave the glasses to the seller, whom he identified only as Michael, at Abbey Road Studios in 1968.
Michael said he was invited to the famous recording studio where the band worked as a birthday present, and Lennon gave him the glasses.
The glasses were sold to an anonymous overseas buyer at an auction held at Farleigh Golf Club.
“In terms of ephemera, everyone wants the Beatles and anything John Lennon is premium. He made the round blue glasses iconic and anything to do with him is in huge demand,” the auction house said.
The seller was brought to Abbey Road Studios by his girlfriend Penny, who was friends with many musicians. Michael recalled: “I took a pair of glasses from the piano. Penny said, 'Don't touch them.' John Lennon turned around and said, 'It's okay. In fact, he can have them. Happy Birthday! These aren't John Lennon's prescription glasses, but he gave them to me and wished me a happy birthday, so that's good enough for me.”
A collection of 33 black and white photographs taken by the glasses' owner in 1968 and 1969 while he was visiting Abbey Road Studios sold for £2,600. Some of the photographs featured Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and George Martin. The other images were taken on the same day as the famous Abbey Road photo shoot, when the Beatles posed while crossing a zebra crossing.
Recall that Carrie Fisher's famous gold bikini from Star Wars was sold at auction. A model of a Y-Wing fighter was also auctioned off.
