A team of researchers from the National Institute of Information and Communication Technology of Japan has broken the world record for Internet speed – now it is 319 terabits per second.
The previous record was 178 terabits per second. To overcome this speed, scientists have built a data transmission system that makes full use of wavelength division multiplexing technology. In addition, the system combines various amplifier technologies.
The Japanese laid optical fiber for 69.8 kilometers, but the final data transmission distance was 3.001 kilometers. The signal was sent through 552 channels at a frequency of 25 GHz. The researchers said the fiber they used could be plugged into existing equipment.
The journalists clarified that the achieved bandwidth would be sufficient for simultaneous playback of 8K YouTube videos from 4.5 million users.
