TOKYO, August 3. / TASS /. A group of experts from the University of Tokyo believe that the delta strain of coronavirus is the most pathogenic among other variants of the new coronavirus. This was announced on Tuesday by NHK TV channel.
Scientists conducted a study in which they artificially created viruses carrying the P681R mutation. This is the most common mutation for all strains of the Indian variation of COVID-19.
It is known that infection with coronavirus leads to the destruction of cells, which then merge into a single mass (the so-called synthesia). In the course of experiments with the participation of rodents, Japanese experts found that infection with the delta strain leads to an increased volume of synticia, which is 2.7 times the mass of similar formations when infected with other variants of the coronavirus. It is this factor that causes, according to scientists, a great tendency to various kinds of pathologies.
In addition, animals infected with the P681R mutation virus lost 4.7-6.9% more in weight than rodents with different strains.
To date, nearly 200 million cases of coronavirus infection have been identified in the world. The number of deaths exceeded 4.2 million.
