Japanese scientists find that smoker's body is better protected from COVID-19

Japanese scientists have found out why the number of COVID-19 infections among smokers was lower in comparison with other people. The results of scientific work are published in the journal Scientific Reports .

A team of researchers led by Hiroshima University radiobiologist Keiji Tanimoto has discovered two drugs that mimic the effects of chemicals in cigarette smoke.

It turned out that these elements are associated with a receptor in mammalian cells that inhibit the production of ACE2 proteins. As a result, SARS-CoV-2 has a reduced ability to enter the cell.

However, smoking, even with the help of electronic cigarettes, is extremely hazardous to health. Since the nicotine contained in tobacco, according to scientists, can provoke a blockage of blood vessels, and then lead to a stroke or heart attack.

Earlier, American scientists identified factors that contribute to the severe course of coronavirus in patients who have received a full vaccination against COVID-19.
