Earthquake in japan
The Japanese nuclear power plant (NPP) “Onagawa”, located in the northeast of the country, was slightly damaged due to the earthquake that occurred on March 20. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the operator of the Tohoku Electric Power station.
According to its representatives, a small part fell from one of the reactors into the spent nuclear fuel (SNF) pool. Several more support elements were found nearby. “There is no negative impact on SNF assemblies,” the company stressed.
It is noted that even before the earthquake, work was underway to dismantle the first reactor “Onagawa”, the second and third reactors were shut down for technical inspection.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 hit Japan on March 20. Residents of several northeastern and eastern prefectures in the country, including Iwate, Ibaraki, Saitama, Fukushima, and Tokyo, experienced powerful tremors. A tsunami threat has been declared on the coast.
The disaster left at least 200 homes in Miyagi Prefecture without electricity. Due to the seismic event in the territory of the prefecture, the movement of high-speed trains “shinkansen” was stopped. Information about the dead and injured was not received.
