The Japanese government supported the US position on the issue of ownership of the southern Kuriles

The Japanese government supports the position of US Ambassador Rahm Emanuel on the issue of the ownership of the islands of the southern Kuril Ridge, Cabinet Secretary General Hirokazu Matsuno said at a press conference. This is reported by TASS.
“The sovereignty of our country extends to the four northern islands. The Government intends to persistently continue negotiations, following the course of solving the territorial problem and concluding a peace treaty [with Russia]. We welcome the words of the American ambassador, who express support for the corresponding position of Japan,” Matsuno stressed.
Earlier, the chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky spoke about the ownership of the Kuril Islands and recalled that this topic is not subject to discussion. In his opinion, the issue was closed many years ago, when agreements were signed on the recognition of Japan’s defeat in the war and the transfer of the islands under the jurisdiction of the USSR.
On February 7, US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel posted a message on social networks that Washington recognizes Japan’s sovereignty over the southern part of the Kuril Islands, which in Tokyo is called the northern territories. Emanuel spoke about the situation in Ukraine and noted that Russia’s disregard for the sovereignty of another state is not something new. He mentioned accusations against the Russian side of pulling troops to the Ukrainian borders.
