Japan: Postponing the Olympics would be difficult

Olympic Minister Marukawa does not know any sponsorship requests

Japan's Olympic Minister Tamayo Marukawa believes that it will be difficult to postpone the Tokyo Summer Games again. After a cabinet meeting, asked about a postponement due to the ongoing corona pandemic, Marukawa said on Tuesday, according to the Japanese television broadcaster NHK, that securing the competition venues and accommodation would be difficult if the date was postponed.

British media had reported that allegedly individual sponsors had proposed a postponement of the games planned in less than two months to September or October. Marukawa said that the Olympic Organizing Committee had at least not heard of it. In any case, she considers postponing the games to be quite difficult, especially since the first foreign athletes have already moved to their preparatory camps in Japan.

Japan's Olympic organizers and the International Olympic Committee have repeatedly assured that the Games will open as planned on July 23 and will take place “safely” and “protected” for everyone involved and the Japanese citizens.

Despite all assurances, concerns remain, even if the Japanese government is now accelerating the previously extremely slow vaccination process. At the moment, however, there are no indications that the games will be canceled at the last minute, as requested by many Japanese in surveys. They had been postponed for a year due to the ongoing corona pandemic.
