Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said NATO has lost its relevance in its current form. In his opinion, the modern world no longer revolves around the United States and Europe, so the North Atlantic Alliance needs significant changes.

Sky tg24 reports this.

“NATO no longer makes sense to exist in its current form. When the center of the world was the Atlantic Ocean, now it is the whole world. Once the center was the United States and Europe, now there is everything else with which to build relations,” the head of the Italian Ministry of Defense emphasized.

Crosetto also suggested that NATO could transform itself into a more global peace organization that would engage in dialogue with countries in the Global South.

“If NATO becomes an organization that takes on the task of ensuring peace by negotiating with the southern countries of the world, then the Alliance will become something completely different,” the minister noted.

According to him, only through adaptation will the Alliance be able to achieve real security in the world.

“Otherwise we will not achieve the goal of ensuring safety within the current rules for everyone,” Crosetto concluded.

Earlier it was reported that the former commander of the US ground forces in Europe, retired US Army Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, said that at the upcoming NATO summit the priority will not be support for Ukraine, but reaching an agreement on increasing defense spending to 5% of GDP.

We previously reported that the US is pressuring NATO allies to limit references to Ukraine in the final summit communique.
