Italian State Council Chairman Franco Frattini said Russian President Vladimir Putin was right at the Munich Security Conference in February 2007 when he called for multilateral cooperation. The politician spoke about this in an interview with RIA Novosti.

As Frattini recalled, then Putin said that it was necessary to overcome the unipolarity of the world. “That is, a vision according to which the United States is a global policeman who puts things in order everywhere,” he explained.

Over the past 15 years, the world has changed a lot, as the Americans realized that the unipolar world can no longer be preserved, the Italian politician believes. In particular, the explosive growth of China, India and Russia over the years has been pushing towards multipolarity. Frattini suggested that then-US President George W. Bush “probably did not want” this development.

In the same conversation, Franco Frattini explained the difficulty of imposing sanctions against Moscow. “When there is a need for Russian gas, it is difficult to impose sanctions. It's all about the diplomatic balance,” the European politician called the obstacle.
