Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has resigned amid the political crisis in the country. This was reported by the Rai News 24 TV channel.

Conte announced his decision to step down during a meeting of the Council of Ministers on January 26. After that, he headed to the Quirinal Palace to submit his resignation letter to President Sergio Mattarella. According to the channel, the conversation lasted about half an hour, after which Conte left the presidential residence. Following this, the politician will meet with the heads of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

In Italy, a political crisis erupted after one of the parties in the ruling coalition withdrew from the government. Former Prime Minister of the country and leader of the center party “Living Italy” Matteo Renzi said that two ministers from his party have left the government. As a result of the collapse of the ruling coalition, the incumbent Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte lost his majority in the Italian Senate.

Tensions between Renzi and Conte increased significantly at the end of last year. The ex-prime minister harshly criticized the government's plan to use the funds allocated to Italy from the European Union's economic recovery fund.
