MOSCOW, October 7. / TASS /. Scientists decided to give an opportunity to return to the wild for a polar bear cub, who lost its mother and left a few days ago in the Chukchi village of Vankarem. Viktor Nikiforov, head of programs at the Marine Mammals Scientific Expeditionary Center, announced this to TASS on Thursday.
“For now, they decided to leave the bear in the wild. Yesterday it was not visible for one day, it was snowing. And tonight it showed up again. He rushed through the village, but obviously he was not hungry, he did not touch the fat that was lying in one place. There is an idea. to put natural food on it – a seal, but now it is very stormy, it is not yet possible to hunt, people are waiting for good weather, “Nikiforov said.
According to him, it was decided to repeat the successful experiment of 2019, carried out in the Chukotka village of Ryrkaypiy. Then, for the first time in the world, it was possible to return to the wild a polar bear – a young of the year (a young individual up to one year old). At present, the Marine Mammals Scientific Expeditionary Center, with the support of the Moscow Zoo and the Wildlife Society ANO, is carrying out a three-year project to develop an algorithm for adapting bear cubs in the wild.
As previously reported by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Russia, on the night of October 3, a lonely bear cub was seen near the village of Vankarem on the shores of the Chukchi Sea. Employees of the WWF Bear Patrol examined the surroundings, but no traces of an adult bear were found.
