The Ministry of Construction of Russia will attract vaccinated migrants from Uzbekistan to the construction of the Vostochny cosmodrome. The department is preparing to bring in about 10,000 workers for work. The ministry believes that specialists from Central Asia can be involved not only in the construction of residential buildings, but also in large infrastructure projects. Earlier, during the construction of Vostochny, cases of poor-quality work were revealed.
As noted by the Deputy Minister of Construction and Housing and Communal Services of Russia Nikita Stasishin, migrants from Uzbekistan will come to Russia already vaccinated with the Sputnik Light vaccine.
“We have described the volume by companies that not only build housing, but also build large infrastructure facilities, including facilities at the Vostochny cosmodrome,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the VIII International Construction Forum and the 100+ TechnoBuild exhibition in Yekaterinburg.
He added that migrants will be brought in soon. Specialists from Central Asia will work at “specific sites” and for “specific companies”.
Trash and theft in Vostochny
The first stage of Vostochny – the launch pad for the Soyuz carrier rockets, assembly and test buildings, etc. – began to be erected back in 2012–2019. The construction cost 91.9 billion rubles. The general contractor for the construction was Spetsstroy of Russia, liquidated at the end of 2016, whose functions were transferred to the Ministry of Defense in 2017. During the construction of the facility, the facts of poor-quality work were revealed, as well as delays in payments to builders. Several criminal cases were opened due to abuses during the construction of the cosmodrome.
The construction of the second stage of the cosmodrome began in 2019. It includes a launch pad for the Angara-A5 rocket and related infrastructure, which should ensure the launch of the rocket in 2023. The second stage is being carried out by the Kazan company. In November 2019, the Investigative Committee opened criminal cases due to embezzlement during construction of more than 240 million rubles.
In September 2021, the head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, said that the problem of corruption during the construction of the Vostochny cosmodrome had been resolved. According to him, after a series of arrests of embezzlers, serious violations do not occur, and the construction scheme itself has become transparent, so “you can breathe.”
