“It was a series of attacks on scientists, with killed and wounded”: In Moscow, 20 years later, suspects were detained in a high-profile case

Moscow investigators detained two suspects in a high-profile criminal case in the early 2000s.

“It was a series of attacks on Russian scientists, with killed and wounded,” a law enforcement source told KP. – More precisely, at first it was believed that this is a series …

In 2002-2003, four attacks were carried out in the south-west of Moscow. Scientists from various fields became victims. This list included, for example, the director of the International Center for Nuclear Safety of Minatom, Sergei Bugaenko.

Three scientists, including Bugaenko, were killed according to the same scenario – in the evening they were beaten to death near their home. The criminals took with them not only valuables, but also portfolios containing various papers with documents. There was a version that some underground organization was hunting for scientists and their developments.

The only survivor of this four was a professor at Moscow State University, dean of the Faculty of History Sergei Karpov. He was attacked in March 2020. The man arrived home in a company car, said goodbye to the driver and entered the entrance. After him out the door from the street followed immediately by three …

“On the staircase, they inflicted multiple blows on the victim's head and body with their hands and feet,” said Yulia Ivanova, senior assistant to the head of the Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia in Moscow.

Taking all the valuables, the criminals fled. The neighbors found Karpov unconscious, with a severe head injury, the professor was taken to the hospital. Miraculously saved.

For a long time, this case was considered a “wood grouse”. Although the version about the hunt for scientists was eventually refuted. It turned out that the nuclear engineer Sergei Bugaenko was shot by a killer of one of the Moscow groups, confusing him with another person who lived in the same entrance.

And now the attack on the historian Sergei Karpov has been uncovered. The Investigative Committee continues to work on old cases, the evidence of which is being studied with the help of new forensic techniques (now, for example, forensic scientists are able to extract “biology” from the DNA of criminals from the things they have thrown and even, for example, fingerprints left on the fabric – Auth.). So they found the defendants in the Karpov case.

– Investigators of the Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia in the city of Moscow and employees of the Moscow Criminal Investigation Department established the identity and whereabouts of the suspects, – continues Ivanova. – They turned out to be two brothers born in 1973 and 1975, previously repeatedly convicted for similar crimes.

It is now clear that Karpov was attacked solely for robbery. At the same time, they were clearly not going to leave him alive. The brothers will be charged under the articles “Attempted Murder” and “Robbery”. Now both are being tested for involvement in two more attacks from the same “series” (or maybe not a series at all). They are still looking for their accomplice, the third participant in the attack on the historian Karpov.
