Scientists in Australia conducted an experiment in which they asked participants to read pseudoscientific articles about the nature of sexual orientation. Because of such readings, some of the subjects began to doubt their own heterosexuality.
In two experiments scientists participated 180 people and 460 people, respectively. Some of the subjects read a supposedly scientific article, which indicated that sexual orientation is something conditional. Others read a text that said there were only three options for sex drive: gay, bisexual, and straight. There were also more articles. In one it was said that sexual orientation can change throughout life, in the other – that it is, on the contrary, something stable.
All participants reported that they were heterosexual prior to the experiment. However, after reading the first article, 28% were more likely to consider themselves possibly homosexual. 19% said they would even be ready for same-sex relationships someday.
Reading an article about changing sexual orientation throughout life had about the same effect.
