According to specialist Daniel Sheligovsky, the West must change its "approach from reactive to proactive".
Only a real threat to the stability of the regime of Kremlin head Vladimir Putin can change his calculations regarding Ukraine.
The head of the Eastern Program of the Polish Institute of International Relations, Dr. Daniel Sheligovsky, said this in an interview with the Kyiv Post.
Simply supporting Ukraine is not enough, he emphasized.
According to the expert, the war needs to be physically transferred to Russian territory and Ukraine should be allowed to attack the necessary targets.
Until now, the West has only reacted to Russia's actions and has not taken any active steps, so many, according to the expert, believe that Ukraine is not at war with Russia, and the West must take an active position, conduct offensive information operations against the Russian regime and Russia, create both internal and external problems for the regime, deplete Russian resources and make life difficult for them in different parts of the world.
“This is not true – we are really at war with Russia because Russia is at war with us,” the expert emphasized.
According to him, unless there is a real threat to the stability of the Russian regime, the head of the Kremlin will not change his calculations on Ukraine.
Daniel Sheligovsky is confident that Putin's priority is the survival of his regime and war is his fundamental element.
“War creates the Russian state and it is on it that the new social contract is based. If a real threat arises to the Kremlin authorities, Putin's calculations regarding Ukraine may change. History shows similar examples. We saw how France withdrew from Algeria due to the destabilization of the political situation within France and threats to the stability of the government,” the expert believes.
He is sure that simply supporting Ukraine will not be enough. The war must be physically transferred to Russian territory and allow Ukraine to attack the necessary targets and strike all strategic targets.
“For its part, the West must change its approach to Russian society. The current approach has led to the fact that Russians collectively enjoy a lack of responsibility,” the expert believes.
“Russian society must experience sanctions”
Daniel Sheligovsky emphasized that Russian citizens do not take responsibility for the actions of the Moscow regime, despite its collective support.
“I believe that sanctions should test Russian society, not just the elites. In this way, we can destroy the social contract based on war and apply pressure to destabilize the system from within,” the expert added.
Recall that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that Ukraine can use Western weapons on the territory of the Russian Federation, which is clearly recognized by international law.
