Former cosmonaut doctor, deputy director of the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Oleg Kotov, told where the “Gagarin” tradition of urinating on the wheel has gone. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

The fact is that the tradition lost its relevance after diapers appeared in the astronaut's wardrobe.

“Regarding” getting on the wheel. “Recently, during the flight to the station, diapers began to be actively used, that is, the problem was removed. In addition, getting off the bus in a spacesuit is not so easy, you need help. then put it all back on. I can say that someone comes out, someone does not, “

Initially, this tradition appeared due to the fact that the bus with the first astronauts made a stop halfway. It was necessary to wait until the refueling train with the propellants departed from the rocket. The stop is necessary in order to maintain a safe distance. As Kotov noted, now buses also make such a stop.

“You can stand waiting for a minute, five, ten minutes. Actually, this tradition originates from this. There was a bus, and once it is, you can go out and pass the time,”

Now, during such stops, members of the main expedition do not get off the bus. During this stop, members of the backup crew enter the bus to wish a successful flight and say parting words, because they themselves will not go further and will follow the launch from the observation post.
