Only representatives of Afghanistan, Tonga and East Timor did not vote for him.
The head of WHO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus became the only candidate for the post of Director General of the organization after the vote.
This is reported by Interfax with reference to Western media.
“I do not know what to say,” Gebreyesus said after almost all 34 members of the executive committee representing the member countries of the organization approved his candidacy. He noted that his five-year tenure as head of WHO was not easy, and called the opportunity to be re-elected a great honor.
It is reported that only representatives of Afghanistan, Tonga and East Timor did not vote for him.
The process of selecting a new WHO Director started in April 2021 and will end in May 2022. From April to September, Member States could propose a candidate for the post of director, even then Gebreyesus had no opponents. On January 25, the executive committee put forward a list of candidates for the post, which included only the current head of WHO. Voting on the candidacy will take place at the World Health Assembly, which will be held on May 22-28.
The current Director-General of WHO can be re-elected only once.
