The administration of US President Donald Trump intends to announce new sanctions against Iran every week before the end of his term. This became known to the Axios portal.
According to two sources of the publication, Washington, together with Israel and the Gulf countries, plans to introduce a “stream” of restrictions against Tehran in the 10 weeks remaining before the inauguration of Democrat Joe Biden. “The goal is to impose as many sanctions as possible against Iran by January 20,” one of the interlocutors stressed. A series of measures will increase pressure on the Islamic republic and create obstacles for the Biden administration if he decides to return to the Iran nuclear deal.
Thus, the US special envoy for Iran, Elliot Abrams, arrived in Israel, where he met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and national security adviser Meir Ben Shabat to discuss the sanctions plan. He is then to travel to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, which are “very concerned about the future policy of the Biden administration” towards Iran.
It is clarified that the planned sanctions are not related to the Iranian nuclear program, since they are likely to be lifted by the Biden administration. The restrictions will apply to Iran's ballistic missile program, assistance to terrorist organizations and human rights violations in that country.
On November 7, Democratic candidate Biden won 290 with the required 270 electoral votes. Having secured his victory, he proclaimed himself the president-elect of the United States. Trump, in turn, said that the elections are not officially over yet, and the results will be appealed in court.
In 2018, the United States reinstated sanctions against Iran in full, and also withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA), which limits Iran's nuclear development. Washington called it a response to the “export of violence, terror and disorder.”
