We are talking only about those protesters who were not involved in violence, threats and pogroms in the offices of legislators. In addition, it is believed that the initiation of such a large number of cases could block the country's judicial system.
However, the other side opposes this, and considers it important to send the Americans a convincing signal that violence and pogroms must be punished to the fullest extent of the law. According to federal estimates, about 800 people took part in the assault. At the moment, charges have been brought against more than 135 citizens, and in the near future their number may only increase, the newspaper notes.
At the moment, the discussion is at an early stage. So far, no final decision has been made on whether to drop the charges against some citizens.
On January 6, Republican protesters stormed the Capitol Building and surrounded the Senate Hall. The Senate and the House of Representatives interrupted a meeting at which it was planned to approve the results of the last elections. During the protests, the police detained almost 70 rioters, five people were killed.
