The Committee of Permanent Representatives of the EU Member States (COREPER) may impose new sanctions against Russia. The possibility of taking new measures became known from a RIA Novosti source in the EU.
The final decision will be made at the next COREPER meeting, which will be held on September 28. Probably, then the committee will agree on a new list of individual sanctions.
The source explained that the measures can be updated “in relation to actions that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.” It is emphasized that the discussion of sanctions is flagged as a possible item and not mandatory.
Relations between Moscow and Brussels have deteriorated since Crimea became part of Russia in 2014. This happened after a referendum in which the majority of the inhabitants of the peninsula supported such a decision. In the same year, the United States, the European Union and some other states imposed sanctions against Russia due to the annexation of the peninsula. Kiev considers this territory annexed and accuses Moscow of violating the rights of the Crimean Tatars. Russian authorities have denied the charges.
