The Iranian military discussed an attack on the US military base at Fort McNair in Washington. The US intelligence learned about this from intercepted negotiations between the soldiers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), reports Associated Press.
According to the National Security Agency (NSA), Iranian military personnel were planning an attack in the spirit of the attack on the US Navy destroyer Cole off the coast of Yemen in 2000. Then a boat filled with explosives crashed into the side of the destroyer, killing 17 American sailors.
Intelligence also became aware of the IRGC's plans to establish surveillance of the military base, infiltrate its territory and kill the deputy chief of staff of the army, General Joseph Martin, whose residence is located in Fort McNair.
Earlier, the US National Intelligence reported that Iran was trying to influence the outcome of the 2020 presidential elections in the United States, trying to prevent Donald Trump from winning them. Tehran allegedly waged a “multi-faceted covert campaign” aimed at undermining Trump's prospects for re-election, public confidence in the US electoral process and institutions, and to “sow discord and exacerbate social tensions” in the country. At the same time, US intelligence believes that Iran did not try to directly assist Trump's rivals.
