Russia is developing a satellite navigation system for the International Space Station, which, unlike the one already in use, will rely on signals not only from GPS, but also from GLONASS, according to representatives of the Rocket and Space Corporation (RSC) Energia and the Institute for Space Research (IKI ) RAS in an article published in the scientific journal “Space Engineering and Technology”. A similar navigation system is already being used on the Soyuz MS and Progress MS spacecraft.

The satellite system for the ISS is required to improve the accuracy of spacecraft docking. “At present, new ASN-KM equipment is being developed for the ISS, which, like ASN-K (used on Soyuz and Progress. – Kommersant ), is being developed based on the signals from the GLONASS and GPS navigation systems,” he quotes. RIA Novosti ”the authors of the article. According to them, the use of two systems will reduce the level of error.

Earlier, the scientific secretary of the IKI RAS, Andrei Sadovsky, told RIA Novosti about the development of sensors for the ISS, which would allow evaluating the development path of a navigation system that has not yet been created using radio pulsars – neutron stars that periodically emit radio pulses.

GLONASS, according to the agency, by the end of 2020 did not reach the accuracy for civilian consumers, which were ordered to achieve according to the federal target program approved in 2012. To improve the accuracy of the system, Russia requested permission from the Czech Republic to build a ground station, but it was not given, Respekt magazine reported.
