The head of the Israeli General Staff Aviv Kochavi has asked the government for more than a billion dollars for a military strike on Iran, Ynetnews reports, citing a source.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanhu allegedly approved the allocation of funds, despite the fact that the defense budget for the current year will only be drawn up this week.
The main goal of the military operation is to prevent the implementation of the Iranian nuclear program. At a conference at the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University, Aviv Kochavi said that before an offensive begins, it is necessary to prevent the resumption of US-Iranian talks on a nuclear deal, which is not yielding tangible results. Moreover, he said, if the previous agreement of 2015 had been implemented, then Iran would most likely already have nuclear weapons. This is due to the fact that the deal did not provide for oversight of the Iranian nuclear program.
Israeli military experts will work out several options for an attack on Iran, the Times of Israel notes. The responsibility for the final decision on the invasion will rest on the shoulders of the country's political leadership, the chief of the General Staff added, but the options for the military operation must be ready. The final result should be submitted by specialists within 2021.
Ynetnews' source, meanwhile, reports that Kochavi already has a “devastating option” to attack Iran. In any case, analysts agree that the Israeli government will have to take into account the interests of Washington in the current situation in order not to harm bilateral relations.
