The UN Security Council will meet today for an emergency meeting.

The UN has received information that Israel has ordered residents of the northern part of the Gaza Strip to move to the south of the enclave within 24 hours.

This was announced by the spokesman for the organization's Secretary General Stephane Dujarric , writes the BBC.

“The UN strongly calls for the cancellation of any such order if it is confirmed to avoid turning an already tragic situation into a catastrophic one,” he said.

According to the UN, the order, which came around midnight on Friday, affects about 1.1 million people – half the population of the entire Gaza Strip.

He noted that the Israeli military had informed UN officials that it was working in Gaza, that the order also applies to all employees of the organization and those on its premises, including schools and hospitals.

“The UN considers it impossible for such a transfer to occur without devastating humanitarian consequences,” Dujarric added.

According to the publication, Israel, apparently, has been preparing for a ground offensive in recent days, massing soldiers, heavy artillery and tanks to the border with Gaza.

The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Friday, October 13.

Israel's representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, reacted sharply to the UN statement in which the organization asks to lift the order to evacuate the northern part of the Gaza Strip in the next 24 hours.

“The UN's response to Israel's advance orders to the people of Gaza is disgraceful! For years, the UN turned a blind eye to Hamas's arming and use of Gaza's civilian population and civilian infrastructure as a shelter for weapons and murder. Now, instead of siding with Israel, whose citizens were killed by Hamas terrorists, and trying to minimize the damage to those who are not involved, she preaches to Israel,” he said.

According to the diplomat, the UN needs to focus on returning hostages captured by militants to Israel.
