Israel attacked Latakia, near which the Russian Khmeimim airbase is located, RIA Novosti writes with reference to the state television of the Syrian Arab Republic.

The rockets were fired into Syria at about 3:21 a.m. (it was 04:21 a.m. in Moscow) on Tuesday 28 December. “The Israeli enemy launched an air missile attack from the Mediterranean Sea west of the city of Latakia,” Syrian journalists said. The target of the Israeli army was a container yard at a trading port in Latakia. As a result of the missile hit, a fire broke out. This led to great material damage, it was specified in Syria, but the amount was not reported.

Syrian air defense systems were used to repel the air attack.

The Russian base Khmeimim, located near Latakia, has existed in Syria since 2015. It is located about 30 kilometers from the Syrian-Turkish border.

Earlier, the Israeli military announced shelling from Syria.
