The far-right believes that with this agreement Israel is giving up the “hard-won achievements of the IDF in the war.”
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, head of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party, and two ministers from his party on Sunday, January 19, announced their resignation from the government of Benjamin Netanyahu after the ceasefire agreement with Hamas was finalized.
The Jerusalem Post reports this.
“The rash approval of an agreement with the terrorist organization Hamas, which provides for the release of hundreds of murderers with the blood of men, women and children on their hands, is a shameful capitulation,” the party said in a statement.
The far-right believes that with this agreement Israel is giving up “the IDF's hard-won gains in the war.” In their view, withdrawing troops from the Gaza Strip and ending hostilities would mean “capitulating to Hamas.”
In an official letter of resignation sent to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Ben-Gvir said that from now on his party would vote based on its “ideology and conscience,” but would not support a vote to remove the entire government.
Yitzhak Wasserlauf (Minister of Negev and Galilee Affairs) and Amichai Eliyahu (Minister of Heritage) also resigned. According to Israeli law, their statements will take effect within 48 hours.
Four other ministers, three from the Religious Zionist Party (Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, Minister of National Missions Orit Strok and Aliyah, and Integration Minister Ofir Sofer) and one from Likud (Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli), had previously threatened to resign from the government if a ceasefire was imposed.
Recall that the Israeli Cabinet approved the agreement with Hamas on a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza.
