Israel may have killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah with an airstrike on the terrorists' headquarters in the Lebanese capital on Friday, 27 September.
AbcNews reported this, citing a high-ranking American official.
The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that at least two people were killed and 76 were injured as a result of the strike.
According to the publication's source, at the time of the strike on the terrorist headquarters, Nasrallah and several of his assistants were in Beirut on a short visit. The strike was carried out with special bunker buster bombs, which are designed to hit underground targets.
At the time of publication, there is no confirmed information whether Israeli forces managed to eliminate Nasrallah.
US President Joe Biden said that the White House did not know about the impending attack on Beirut and did not take part in its preparation.
Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, at a press conference after the attack on Beirut, also said that Israel did not warn the US about its plans, and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with his Israeli counterpart after the strike.
“This operation took place within the last few hours. We are all “We are still assessing the incident and do not have any additional information or details at this time,” Singh said.
The Israel Defense Forces said it had carried out a precision strike on the central headquarters of the Hezbollah terrorist organization, a bunker located under a residential building.
“The central headquarters of Hezbollah was deliberately built under residential buildings in the heart of the Dahiya neighborhood of Beirut as part of Hezbollah's strategy to use Lebanese people as human shields,” the IDF Spokesperson's Office said.
Recall that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel has no intention of stopping military operations against Hezbollah. Israeli army chief General Hertzi Halevi has ordered soldiers to be prepared for a possible invasion of Lebanon.
