Iran is not going to negotiate its missile program with the new US administration. This was stated by President Hassan Rouhani, reports Reuters.
“America has been trying for months to include the missile program (on the agenda of nuclear talks), but we rejected all these attempts … And Mr. Biden is well aware of this,” Rouhani warned during a press conference.
Instead, Tehran is demanding that the US itself make adjustments to its policy towards Iran, lifting sanctions from it and compensating for the economic damage caused to the country by withdrawing from the “nuclear deal.”
In early December, Democratic candidate Joe Biden, who allegedly won the US presidential election, announced plans to return Washington to an agreement on Iran's nuclear program – the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). He also said that he plans to negotiate and conclude subsequent agreements with Iran, which would “tighten and extend restrictions on Iran's nuclear program, as well as would affect its missile program.”
On November 3, 2020, the next presidential elections were held in the United States. According to media estimates, Joe Biden received the necessary electoral votes to win and overtook the current leader, Donald Trump. Biden has already proclaimed himself US President-elect.
In 2018, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA, which concerned Iran's nuclear program, and imposed sanctions on Tehran. Trump called on the guarantor countries of the nuclear deal with Iran to abandon the further support of the current agreement.
