Iran temporarily suspends cooperation with IAEA

Iran has formally announced its intention to stop cooperating with the IAEA until Tehran says its nuclear facilities are secure.

Iran has announced the suspension of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The corresponding statement was made by the representative of the parliamentary committee on national security, Ebrahim Rezai, Reuters reports.

“The Iranian parliamentary committee has approved a master plan to suspend cooperation with the IAEA,” the official statement said.

Iranian lawmakers have backed the general principles of the bill, which calls for a complete cessation of cooperation with the IAEA, in particular regarding inspections and reporting. As Rezaei noted, cooperation with the agency will be resumed only after guarantees of the safety of Iranian nuclear facilities.

“Until the safety of Iran's nuclear facilities is guaranteed, inspection authorization and reporting will be suspended,” the committee spokesman said.

The document still needs to be reviewed and voted on at a plenary session of the Iranian parliament.

The decision came in response to a recent statement by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, who called on Tehran to report to the agency any movement of nuclear materials within the country.

Earlier, it was reported that US President Donald Trump commented on the Iranian strikes on the US airbase in Qatar, calling them a “weak response” and thanking Tehran for the warning that allowed it to avoid casualties.

We previously reported that during his visit to Moscow, the Iranian Foreign Minister handed Putin a letter from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which spoke of a request for help.
