Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has called on Middle Eastern countries to cooperate after the US elections. This message is contained in his Twitter account.
He commented on the preliminary results of the vote with the phrase “[US President Donald] Trump is gone, but we will stay with our neighbors.” According to the Foreign Minister, Tehran extends “a hand to its neighbors to achieve the common interests of our peoples and countries.” Zarif emphasized that dialogue is the only way to end disagreements and tensions and together build a better future for the region.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Said Khatibzade assessed the possibility of negotiations with Democrat Joe Biden. He noted that returning to dialogue will not be easy, and practical steps from the opposite side are important for Iran.
On November 8, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo got into an altercation with Iran's supreme leader on Twitter over his remarks about the US presidential election. Khamenei called the US presidential election a spectacle and an example of “the ugly face of liberal democracy.” In response, Pompeo accused Khamenei of “personally stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from his people.” Later, Khatibzadeh explained that the American politician was furious, as he would soon find himself in the “backyard of history.”
On November 7, Democratic candidate Biden won 290 with the required 270 electoral votes. Having secured his victory, he proclaimed himself the president-elect of the United States. Trump, in turn, said that the elections are not officially over yet, and the results will be appealed in court.
