The New York Times reported this, citing people familiar with the order.
The publication clarified that Khamenei gave the order at an emergency meeting of Iran's Supreme National Security Council.
This information was confirmed by three Iranian officials, including two members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the military branch of Iran's executive branch. They asked that their names not be published because they are not authorized to speak publicly.
Earlier, Iran and Hamas accused Israel of killing Ismail Ghania, who was in Tehran for the inauguration of Iran's new president.
Israel has a long history of assassinating enemies abroad, including Iranian nuclear scientists and military commanders.
During the nearly 10-month war in Gaza, Iran has tried to pressure Israel with sharply increased attacks from its allies and proxy forces in the region, while avoiding an all-out war between the two nations.
