The reactor will allegedly be for research purposes
The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Mohammad Eslami, said on Monday that the 10-megawatt The Isfahan research reactor will become Iran's fourth nuclear reactor in the region.
This was reported by the Iranian state news agency IRNA.
Eslami said the process of designing and building reactors requires some detailed studies, preparation of equipment, adding that plans for a new reactor in Isfahan began last year.
The second phase of the project began on Monday to pour concrete for the reactor foundation, he said.
According to the head of AEOI, the research reactor is being built to create a powerful neutron source with a high neutron flux for various applications.
Eslami said that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) named the Isfahan Nuclear Research Center as one of the facilities dedicated to training purposes, adding that Iran uses the center to assist Iranian academic centers and for human resource training.
AEOI chief visited the Isfahan nuclear site to attend the opening ceremony of a facility to produce tellurium hexafluoride (TeF6), which is a stable radioisotope used for medical diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Energy said what the consequences could be in the event of an accident at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
We would like to add that at the beginning of December there was a complete blackout at the Zaporizhia NPP – a threat to radiation safety.
