Iran assessed its ability to create nuclear weapons

Iran can even now begin to enrich uranium to 90 percent, but does not seek to create nuclear weapons. This is how President Hassan Rouhani reacted to concerns about Iran's ability to develop its own nuclear bomb, IRNA quoted him as saying.

Rouhani noted that he is ready to return to his obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) if the rest of the parties, including the United States, also begin to adhere to the agreement. At the same time, he called the fears that Iran might decide to enrich uranium up to 90 percent, which will be enough to create nuclear weapons, as groundless.

On the eve of Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi said that Iran will begin to enrich uranium up to 60 percent after the sabotage at the nuclear facility in Natanz, which took place on April 11. The massive explosion reportedly destroyed the well-protected internal electrical system that powered the uranium-enriching centrifuges. In Iran, the incident was considered a terrorist attack, but the damage caused to it was assessed as insignificant. According to the authorities, the accident did not lead to a suspension of uranium enrichment, and the damaged equipment will soon be replaced with new ones.

The JCPOA agreement on Iran was concluded in the summer of 2015 between Tehran and six intermediary countries. Later, Iran was caught in gross violations of the agreements. In early May 2018, Trump announced Washington's unilateral withdrawal from the deal and the resumption of anti-Iranian sanctions. Iran announced the abandonment of the JCPOA agreements in January 2020.
