The second refugee team in the history of the Olympic Games consists of 29 athletes. One of them is the Iraqi wrestler Aker Al Obaidi, who lives in Tyrol and trains at RSC Inzing. He was selected from 56 candidates from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) sponsorship program for Tokyo. Al Obaidi is looked after in Japan by trainer Ernst Benedikt.
Due to the political situation in many crisis countries, the IOC decided to nominate a refugee team for the first time in 2016. In Rio de Janeiro ten refugees from four countries – started in three sports. The Refugee Team competed under the Olympic flag.
