IOC is betting on mood change in Japan ahead of the Tokyo Games

The IOC hopes for a change of opinion in Japan

Despite the sustained majority of the polls in Japan against the Summer Games in Tokyo, the International Olympic Committee is firmly committed to a change in sentiment. “We take public opinion into account. We think the games can take place. And if there is a special moment, that will be reflected,” said IOC spokesman Mark Adams on Wednesday.

According to surveys, a clear majority of the Japanese have been speaking for months in favor of canceling or relocating the Tokyo Games because of the consequences of the Corona crisis. By Wednesday, more than 330,000 people had signed a petition from a Japanese lawyer calling on IOC President Thomas Bach: “Cancel the Tokyo Olympics to protect our lives”.

“We understand that people are very careful,” said Adams. The test competitions in Tokyo, the hosting of numerous international championships, the strict hygiene concept for the Olympics and the support of the World Health Organization could give the Japanese people confidence. “We are sure that we can host good games,” said the IOC spokesman.

“If the Games are on and the Japanese are proud to host an event that will mark a historic moment, then public opinion will be clearly in favor of the event,” added Adams. The IOC has great understanding for the extension of the corona emergency in Tokyo and other regions until the end of May. It is a “very difficult time for everyone”. But one expects “outstanding games that really bring the world together”.
