IOC President Thomas Bach thanked the heads of state and government of the G7 countries for their support for the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer. “We take this as a great encouragement to deliver safe Olympic and Paralympic Games # Tokyo2020 for everyone in this spirit of global solidarity,” said the head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Sunday via Twitter.
In Carbis Bay in England, the seven industrial nations Germany, USA, Italy, France, Great Britain, Canada and Japan spoke out in their final declaration on Sunday in favor of holding the Olympic Games despite the ongoing corona pandemic: “We confirm our support for the Conduct the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in a safe way as a symbol of global unity in overcoming COVID-19. “
The games start on July 23rd and end on August 8th. They take place under strict corona rules and were postponed by twelve months due to the pandemic last year.
In the host country itself, the major sporting event is controversial because of the continued tense corona situation. Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga had nevertheless reaffirmed his determination at the summit to hold the Olympic Games in Tokyo in July, regardless of the corona pandemic.
