IOC approaches e-sports with virtual competitions

The International Olympic Committee wants to host virtual competitions in the run-up to the Olympic Games in Tokyo. As the IOC announced in Lausanne on Thursday, tournaments are to take place at the Olympic Virtual Series (OVS) in cooperation with five international sports associations.

“The Olympic Virtual Series is a new and unique digital Olympic experience that aims to appeal to a new audience in the field of virtual sports,” said IOC President Thomas Bach, according to the announcement.

The disciplines are baseball, cycling, rowing, sailing and motor sports. The competitions are to take place from May 13th to June 23rd, a good month before the summer games in Tokyo. The gaming brands involved include the cycling video game hybrid “Zwift”, the racing game “Gran Turismo” and “eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020” by Konami. The selected games are all strongly related to sports, but do not play a major role in e-sports.
