Intel has lost the case to the Institute of Microelectronics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMECAS). The dispute concerned patents for the production of vertical-gate transistors FinFET. Intel has been using these transistors in its Core processors since 2011. Now the company faces a fine of 200 million yuan (about $ 31 million), as well as a ban on the sale of processors in China.
According to Tom's Hardware, IMECAS filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Intel in 2018. The American company tried to challenge the claims and even postpone the trial to the United States, but was refused. The lost trial was already the sixth for Intel in the dispute over FinFET. The IMECAS lawsuit requires a ban on the sale of Core processors until the parties come to a licensing agreement.
The publication notes that IMECAS has extensive legal experience in patent cases. The institute has registered more than 5,000 patents in China and 500 in foreign countries.
Earlier “Secret” wrote that Intel plans to buy one of the world's largest chip manufacturers GlobalFoundries, owned by an investment fund from the UAE. The deal, already valued at $ 30 billion, could be the largest acquisition in Intel's history.
