Inseparable spouses commit suicide after diagnosis: pensioners leave touching letter

Their bodies were found in the house.

In the UK, an elderly couple decided to die at home together after learning an unbearable diagnosis.

Daily writes about this Star.

Lynn Hunt, 77, was diagnosed with degenerative motor neurone disease, which would have left her “chair-tied and talking like Stephen Hawking”. Lynn, who is already a cancer survivor, and her husband Ian Hunt, 81, decided they could not be separated and were found dead at their home in Carnie, Cornwall, in March this year.

An inquest heard Lynn trained as a secretary and worked as an assistant to the head of children's services at Cornwall Council before retiring. Ian, a keen pianist and wood turner, has had a number of jobs during his life, including being an air traffic controller and a carpenter.

The couple have done everything together with their dog Fern and have lived in Cornwall since 2002.

Lynne told her family she didn't want her head tied to a chair or fed through a tube. Her condition worsened after a series of falls in March, and further tests revealed her condition was more serious than previously thought.

“Lynne was terrified of what the disease would do to her body,” said her sister Kerry. “I knew how it had affected her. She was terrified of how it would affect her and how it would affect Ian. She didn't want to go on like that. She told me she didn't want any of the care package. It was a huge shock when Lynne and Ian died, but looking at the state she was in, I understand what they did. The fact that they did it in secret, without their family, with a bottle of champagne, is very sad, but I respect their choice.”

The couple died from a drug overdose, it was established after their bodies were found on March 15. Firefighters were called to the scene amid fears they may have suffered carbon monoxide poisoning.

The couple left behind a final letter, a will and instructions on how to care for their beloved dog Fern, investigating officer Victoria Swan said. In the letter, the couple thanked their loved ones and the medical staff who cared for Lynn.

Swan said: “Lynn knew what was going to happen to her body in the near future. Ian and Lynn did everything together. They were inseparable and lived for each other. They knew what the future would be like and they didn't want to live without each other, so they decided to sleep together.”

Making a finding of joint suicide, Assistant Coroner for Cornwall and the Isles of Scully Guy Davies said: “The evidence shows that Lynn and Ian were loving and devoted to each other. After being diagnosed with motor neurone disease, they made a clear decision not to be separated and took their own lives together. They did everything together and were a close couple in life and in death”.

Recall that the couple who met on a blind date and lived in marriage for 61 years, died within a few days of each other. The couple's grandchildren call them ideal and an example.
