Inhabitants of highlands turned out to be less prone to strokes
Scientists from Ecuador analyzed the incidence of strokes in residents of different altitudes, and found that residents of high mountains are less susceptible to cerebral hemorrhages, reports TASS with reference to the journal Frontiers in Physiology .
“More than 160 million people live at an altitude of 2.5 kilometers from sea level and above, but we know almost nothing about how often they suffer from heart and vascular diseases. Many colleagues believed that there was no difference between the inhabitants of the lowlands and the highlands in this regard, but it turned out that their physiology is very different, ”said Professor of the American University Esteban Ortiz-Prado.
It is noted that life in the mountains significantly changes the functioning of the lungs and the cardiovascular system, forcing the organs to adapt to the lack of oxygen in the air.
Scientists have observed the inhabitants of Ecuador for 17 years, analyzed the incidence of strokes, diet and general health of people, the presence of bad habits, chronic diseases and other factors. The case histories showed that the inhabitants of the highlands were less likely to die of strokes by 12-17%. In addition, they were twice admitted to hospitals with non-fatal cerebral hemorrhages.
Those who live at an altitude of 2.5-3.5 thousand meters turned out to be especially healthy people in this respect.
Scientists in the next studies plan to look for the pattern further and find out exactly how thin air helps to avoid the occurrence of strokes.
Green tea also helps prevent the development of many diseases, including cardiovascular and stroke, and some cancers such as endometrial, lung, and ovarian cancer. This is due to the content of catechins that green tea is rich in.
