Inflation rose by 0.8 percent

In France, the inflation rate was higher than expected in January. The European consumer price index (HICP) rose by 0.8 percent compared to the same month last year, according to the Insee statistics office, according to an initial estimate. This is the highest rate since last July. Analysts had only expected 0.5 percent. In December the price level had stagnated year-on-year.

The prices for services and processed products rose year-on-year. The winter sales, which started late due to the corona crisis, also contributed to this. Energy prices fell again, but not as strongly as in the previous month.

Compared to the previous month, consumer prices rose by 0.3 percent in January. Stagnation was expected here. In December, prices were up 0.2 percent.
