It has thrown ash for tens of kilometers. People are advised to limit their time outdoors.

The Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano in Indonesia has been erupting for the second day, creating a large cloud of lava and ash, causing flight cancellations and school closures.

This was reported by The Independent and Sky News.

A thick layer of volcanic ash blanketed villages in south-central Indonesia this morning, with clouds of lava and ash rising to heights of up to 4 km. According to local authorities, the eruption began at midday on July 7. At that time, a column of ash reached 18 km in height. The day before dinner, the volcano became active again. The explosion ejected lava and a new cloud of ash that rose to a height of 13 km.

Drone observations showed lava filling the crater, indicating deep magma movement that caused volcanic earthquakes.

“A state of emergency has been declared in the region. Residents and tourists are prohibited from approaching the crater closer than six kilometers,” local authorities emphasize.

Roads and rice fields in the affected areas were covered in a layer of grey ash. Residents are advised to limit their time outdoors.

There have been no reports of casualties or deaths so far. However, residents have been forced to put on masks and leave their homes. Photos and videos are circulating on social media showing people running away in a rain of ash and hot gravel.
