On Next week, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. During this visit, India will try to offer the Kremlin an alternative to circumventing Western sanctions that have brought Moscow closer to Beijing.

The authoritative publication The Wall Street Journal writes about this on Friday, July 5th.

The article says that India is increasingly concerned about Russia's rapprochement with China, which is India's main geopolitical rival and even adversary, given the conflict over disputed territories.

Indian experts say India's good relations with Russia are part of efforts aimed at countering its powerful Chinese neighbor.

“It will be impossible to keep China in Asia if Russia becomes China's junior partner,” said Nandan Unnikrishnan, head of the Eurasia program at the Observer Research Foundation in New Delhi.

“There were some concerns that Indian-Russian ties have deteriorated due to Western pressure. The visit will quell these speculations,” said former Indian Foreign Minister and former Indian Ambassador to Russia Kanwal Sibal.

Moscow expert on Russian-Indian relations Alexei Zakharov noted on this occasion that India is seeking to “make sure that Russia has an alternative” and “it [the Russian Federation] will not have to put all its eggs in the Chinese basket.”

This will be Modi's first visit to Moscow in the last five years, as well as the first personal meeting with Vladimir Putin since the fall of 2022.

In June this year, the Indian Prime Minister met with US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy.

Recall , earlier the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India explained why this country, which participated in the Peace Summit initiated by Ukraine in Switzerland, did not support the joint communiqué.
