India wanted to remove all references to the Indian strain of the coronavirus from social networks. The corresponding letter was sent by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of India, sources in the government told RIA Novosti.
The Indian authorities have asked all social media platforms to immediately remove all content related to the Indian strain of COVID-19.
They also called for the removal of everything that implies the existence of this strain. The text of the letter clarifies that the World Health Organization (WHO) has not officially named any of the variants of the coronavirus that way.
On May 20, it became known that cases of infection with the Indian strain of coronavirus were detected in Russia. This was confirmed by the head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova.
Earlier in May, the head of the unit for emerging diseases and zoonosis at WHO, Maria Van Kerkhove, said the organization had raised the threat of a triple mutated strain of coronavirus from India. Experts acknowledged that it has become a cause for concern at the global level. This means that the Indian strain was found to be similar to viruses that are recognized as the most infectious, deadly or resistant to vaccines and treatments. The reason for this is that the mutated infection spreads much faster than the original SARS-CoV-2 strain.
